As we age, physical activity becomes even more important for overall well-being than when we were young. The CDC statesregular physical activity is vital for healthy aging because it helps delay, prevent, or even manage many costly, chronic diseases.” This is why as part of the ongoing Vernon Hills Senior Outreach initiative, we at Meridian Health Care were honored to work with the Village of Vernon Hills, Charter Senior Living, the Vernon Hills Seniors Organization and also the Victory Centre of Vernon Hills to have a unique opportunity to introduce area seniors to Bears Fit, a state of the art fitness center that’s open to the public. What better place to visit in preparation for the upcoming NFL season! Upon arrival to Bears Fit, the seniors were in awe the moment they walked in the door (quite frankly, I was as well).

Before we all explored the facility as a group, Marie (Bears fit representative) gave our group a tour. We started off by viewing some of the Chicago Bears memorabilia they have on display.

After viewing the memorabilia, we then all viewed the main attraction: the fitness floor. Cardio, weights, and even a mock field for dryland training.

The seniors couldn’t wait to start trying some of the equipment, especially on the field.

While detailed writing can often be used to describe the joy and atmosphere of an event, in this case, a picture is worth 1000 words.

Not only did the seniors get to check out a new fitness center in the community they are a part of, they also had fun interacting with one another and being social, which is one of the goals of the Vernon Hills Senior Outreach Initiative.

After a fun day at Bears Fit, Charter Senior Living residents went on a Jamba Juice run with Charter staff, where as the Seniors Organization members were treated to lunch by Victory Centre back at Vernon Hills village hall.

We at Meridian Health Care had a fantastic day with our partners and the area seniors. Exercise, laughs and most of all, social interaction.  What’s not to love? A special thank you to Bears Fit for hosting us all and for helping bridge the gap between independent living seniors and for seniors that reside in care communities. We look forward to the next outreach initiative event, which will be coming up soon.
